What to Expect
Here's Exactly What Happens in Your Child's Free Session
Arrive & Settle In
Walk in at 6424 S. Cass Ave. in Westmont.
Shoes and phones go in the cubby.
Your child gets their Mighty Oak Athletic Level 1 training shirt — theirs to keep whether they sign up or not.
They meet Coach Mike (CSCS), then get paired with a buddy at their training level to serve as their peer guide for the session.
Movement Assessment
Before any weight moves, we watch how your child moves.
Squat pattern, hinge pattern, overhead position, core control.
This tells us where to start — and what to build toward.
Coached Training Block
Warm-up, skill work, and a real training session — squat, deadlift, overhead press, and chin-up, coached stride for stride.
Age-appropriate load. No machines. No gimmicks. Just real coaching on real barbells.
Parent Debrief
Coach Mike walks you through what he saw, what your child did well, and what they'd work on next.
You leave with a clear picture — whether you sign up or not.
Who This Session Is For
Who We Train at Mighty Oak Athletic
We train kids ages 6 to 18 from across the western Chicago suburbs.
Some are varsity athletes.
Some are kids who just want a place to move and get strong.
All of them belong here.
Kids who come through our doors usually fall into one of these buckets:
- Multi-sport athletes — football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, hockey, wrestling, gymnastics, cheer, dance, track, tennis, swimming, flag football — who want to get stronger without quitting their sport.
- Kids who aren't in team or individual sports but want a place to move, get strong, and get fit. Maybe organized sports weren't their thing. Maybe they just want an outlet. MOA is built for them too.
- Kids brand-new to strength training. No experience needed. Most of our athletes start never having touched a barbell.
- Kids who've trained at a chain gym or done an app-based program and want real coaching from a real human for the first time.
- Serious competitive athletes looking for off-season or in-season programming built on the barbell.
If your kid is between 6 and 18 and wants to be stronger, more confident, and better — this session is for them.
Why Parents Choose MOA
Why Families Across DuPage County Choose Mighty Oak Athletic
Real Coaches. Not an App. Every single session is coached in person by Coach Mike (CSCS) or a credentialed MOA coach. Your child isn't watching a tablet. They're being taught.
Phones Stay in the Cubby. For the full hour, your kid is present. Eyes up. Talking to teammates. Learning to compete, encourage, and push. That's a big part of what parents tell us they notice first.
Barbell-Based From Day One. We teach the squat, deadlift, overhead press, chin up, and suitcase carry — the five human movement patterns. That's the same foundation used by every serious strength coach in the country, scaled to the kid in front of us.
13+ Years in Westmont. Three Books. Nine Shirt Levels. MOA was founded in 2013 by Coach Mike Ockrim (CSCS), published author of Death Resistant, 13 Pounds in 30 Days, and Mighty Oak Athletic Nutrition. Our nine-level shirt system tracks your child's real progress across years of training.
